VTzilla: VirusTotal Firefox Addon

From , former About.com Guide

VTzilla, from the folks at VirusTotal, lets you easily check the safety of a link, download, or website. Simply download and install the VTzilla addon (Firefox users only) and restart your browser for the addon to take effect. VirusTotal currently incorporates over 42 virus scanners and several reputation scanners to help determine whether that link, download, or website is considered malicious. VTzilla is a Firefox addon so it works the same whether you use Windows or a Mac. Following are the 4 feature benefits of the free VTzilla addon.

1. Link Checker

VTzilla lets you scan suspicious links in webmail or on the Web. Simply right-click any link on a website or in a webmail you've received and select "Scan wtih VirusTotal". This will open up a new tab in your Firefox browser and show the results of the scan of the link destination. If there was a downloaded file involved, just click the "View downloaded file analysis" link to see those results.

2. Download Scanner

When you try to open an attachment in webmail or download , a dialog will popup asking whether you want to open the file, or scan it with VirusTotal, or save it to disk. Your best bet: select "Scan with VirusTotal" and then check "Do this automatically for files like this" so future webmail attachments will be scanned without prompting. The file will then be sent to VirusTotal for a scan against 42+ virus scanners and several reputation scanners. After the scan is complete, you can view the results and determine whether you actually want to download or open that file.

3. Website Scanner

VTzilla can scan a website you're already on to check for malware. Keep in mind that VTzilla is a diagnostic tool - not a prevention too. VTzilla only scans the site being displayed and any site being displayed has already had opportunity to infect your computer. To use, simply click the "Scan current site" option in the VTzilla addon bar.

4. VirusTotal Search Engine

If you've got an MD5 or SHA1 of a suspicious file, the VTzilla addon lets you quickly search VirusTotal for any prior reports on that file. Simply paste the MD5 or SHA1 into the VTzilla addon bar and click "Search VirusTotal".
