Prevent SWF (Flash) in Adobe PDF files

By

Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2 and earlier contains a vulnerability that is exploitable via Adobe Reader and Acrobat. Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris operating systems are all vulnerable to the exploit if Adobe Reader or Acrobat is used.

To prevent Flash exploits from rendering in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, Windows users will need to delete the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x for Windows. Doing so may result in an error message if SWF-containing PDF files are opened. However the instance of legitimate (non-infected) Flash in PDF files is extremely rare.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 15 mins

Here's How:

  1. Open Windows Explorer or another file manager.
  2. For Adobe Reader, delete the file authplay.dll from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\
  3. For Adobe Acrobat, delete the file authplay.dll from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\
  4. Other settings in Adobe Reader and Acrobat should also be configured to prevent exploit via Javascript and other active content features. For instructions, see How to Make Adobe Reader and Acrobat Safer.
