How to Disable Java in Firefox

By

Whether you're a Mac or a PC user, chances are good that Sun's Java (not to be confused with JavaScript) is installed on your computer, However, chances are also good that you very seldom actually need Java. That's a good thing because Java is fast becoming one of the most targeted third-party applications for malicious exploit via the Web. One easy thing you can do to avoid this method of attack is simply disable Java. When you do need it for that website game or calculator, just re-enable it (but be sure to turn it back off when you're done).

Here's how to disable Java in Firefox.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Firefox v3.5 and below:

Windows users: open Firefox and click Tools | Options. Click the Content tab and uncheck Enable Java

Mac users: open Firefox and click Firefox | Preferences. Click the Content tab and uncheck Enable Java

  2. Firefox v3.6 and above:

Windows and Firefox users: open Firefox and click Tools | Addons. Click the Plugins tab, locate each of the Java plugins, and click the Disable button for each.

  3. Mac users, just close the Preference dialog to save the changes. Windows users, click OK.
  4. When you encounter a site that requires Java (for example, some website games and calculators), you can re-enable Java easily by following the same steps above, only this time choosing to enable instead of disable. Be sure to re-disable Java when done.
