Hoaxes have a life of their own, seemingly wandering the depths of cyberspace endlessly, despite all attempts to squash the unfounded rumors. Perhaps none have been as victimized as was NVision Design, Inc, makers of the popular - and hoax-ridden - games Elf Bowl and Frogapult. Email began widely circulating, accusing the games of being infected with a malicious virus:

TO ALL

IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED ANY OF THESE GAMES = FROGAPULT.EXE ELFBOWL.EXE (FROG GAME) & (ELF BOWLING GAME)

PLEASE CAN YOU DELETE THEM COMPLETELY OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM AS THEY BOTH HAVE A DELAYED VIRUS ATTACHED TO THEM THAT WILL BE ACTIVATED ON CHRISTMAS DAY AND WILL WIPE OUT YOUR SYSTEM. LET EVERYONE KNOW OF THIS.

Security software company Symantec went to great lengths to debunk the malicious rumors, going so far as to CRC known good copies of the games in an attempt to alleviate fears. Dan Ferguson, one of the original creators of these games, noted that the "virus rumor was a mess and I don't know how we weathered it all but we did." Indeed, Dan and his partner sold NVision Design shortly after these hoaxes became widespread. Vectrix.com, the company who purchased NVision and thus acquired the badly maligned games has since closed. Fortunately, Dan and his partner have now resurfaced with a whole new set of new games, offered at their site www.kewlbox.com. They even have a new Elf game, Santa Balls.

While these games are lots of fun, it's important to remember that they are executables and should not be shared via email. This will avoid confusion and perhaps mitigate the chances of these new games becoming victims of new hoaxes.
