Eudora
Securing your mail client is just one of the steps necessary to achieve optimum security against email threats. If you have not already done so, visit the Email Help Center for tips on spotting malicious attachments and the do's and dont's of email security. Mark W. from Denmark provides the following tips for securing Eudora:

Eudora and Email Viruses
Submitted by Mark W., Denmark

Qualcomm has virtually no information on their website about how to protect from email viruses and Eudora users are very much left to their own devices. The latest help file also offers little help.

The little information they do have isn't easy to find:

Computer viruses and Email
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1612hq.html

Eudora Email Security Advisory
http://www.eudora.com/security.html

All Qualcomm has recommended on their website is:

a. that you disable "Allow executables in HTML content" in Tools: Options: Viewing mail,
b. that you rename the Attach directory/folder to something of your own choice and reconfigure the program to know this (http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2020hq.html tells you how to do this). The reason for doing this is that malicious persons may use the default location when creating viruses.
c. that you turn off the Microsoft Viewer under Tools: Options: Viewing mail. This is an extreme solution as it will mean that many emails will not display correctly. Instead I suggest that the "Show message preview pane" (also in Tools: Options: Viewing mail) be disabled so that the user always has complete control of what he wants to open and can delete suspect files without opening them.
d. Eudora warns you if you attempt to launch many file extensions as attachments. To change this setting (I would recommend this) so that you are warned every time you launch an attachment, regardless of the extension:

Create a new message in Eudora and paste the line below into the body of the new message (including the brackets):
< x-Eudora-option:WarnLaunchExtensions=|>

Alt-Click the URL to bring up the Change Option dialog

Check to make sure the dialog's New Value field contains this: | (That's a vertical bar) then click "OK"

To avoid being warned when you attempt to open certain extensions which are not dangerous, use the WarnLaunchRemove setting. Repeat the above procedure with the following:

<x-Eudora-option:WarnLaunchRemove=txt|bmp|jpg|gif|>

You can also edit the Eudora .ini file manually. Close Eudora, then open the "Eudora.ini" file in your Eudora program directory/folder with a text editor, such as Notepad. Find the line that has the text "[Settings]" on it, and add the following lines right after that one:

WarnLaunchExtensions= |
WarnLaunchRemove= txt|bmp|jpg|gif|

The Eudora help file has no specific page with information about how to protect yourself from viruses, but spread throughout the help file they suggest that the following options are set for best protection:

Tools: Options: Automation : "Warm on automation send of messages" should be enabled

Tools: Options: Extra Warnings : "Launch a program from a message" and "Launch a program externally" should both be enabled

Tools: Options: MAPI : "Warn on MAPI autosend of messages" should be enabled

You should also make sure you have all applicable critical patches and updates applied to your system. Visit the Windows Update site, choose Product Updates, and install any marked as "Critical". You should check for updates periodically, as Microsoft generally products a vast number of patches each year. You will also want to periodically read the Eudora Email Security Advisory for any updated threat notifications.

To disable scripting in other mail clients, choose from the list below:

Outlook/Outlook Express
Netscape
Pegasus
