Description: Navidad is a worm that arrives as an email attachment named Navidad.exe. There's a bug in the worm that causes other executables not to run. It copies itself to the Windows\System directory as WINSVRC.VXD. However, it registers itself in the system incorrectly, using the name WINSVRC.EXE After infection, if you attempt to launch an application, you'll get the following error message:

Windows cannot find WINSVRC.VXD This application is needed for opening files of type "Application"

What to look for: The easiest method would be to search for the registry for the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Navidad
How to prevent it: Information concerning disinfection is dependent upon the antivirus software used. Two vendors providing information are Symantec and F-Secure. If you do not currently have antivirus software installed on your system, visit the Free Protection section. Also see While We're Talking for tips on securing your PC against malicious code.
