How to Remove Platan

Difficulty Level: Hard    Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Locate a copy of Regedit and msconfig.exe if they have been deleted from the computer. Place them in the Windows System directory.
  2. Click on the Start button and select "Run..." from the Start menu. Type REGEDIT and click on "OK" to run the Regedit program.
  3. Click on plus symbol for each directory, in order: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run.
  4. Click on the registry key "iexpand" and press delete. Confirm deletion to remove it from the registry.
  5. Select "Exit" from the Registry menu.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Delete all files and emails related to the Platan Trojan, including iexpand.exe in the Windows System directory if it exists.

Tips:

  1. Backup all work before beginning editing the registry.
  2. Regedit is normally deleted by the Trojan to make detection and removal more difficult.
  3. Good sources for files like regedit.exe include the Internet, CD, backup disk, friend's computer, or local store.
