How to Create a Windows 3.X Startup Disk
Difficulty Level:
Easy
Time Required:
15 minutes
Here's How:
- Double-click on File Manager or use the "Run..." option in the File menu to locate and run File Manager.
- Select "Make System Disk..." from the Disk menu.
- Insert a blank floppy disk into the computer and follow the prompts on the screen to make the startup system disk.
- After using the "Make System Disk..." option the floppy disk will have two invisible files and one visible file, command.com.
- Use File Manager to copy the following files to the floppy disk: autoexec.bat, config.sys, chkdsk.exe, edit.com, fdisk.exe, and format.com.
- If space is still available on the disk copy over attrib.exe, debug.exe, drvspace.bin, scandisk.exe, scandisk.ini, and uninstal.exe.
- Remove the disk from the computer and move the plastic tab to the locked position.
- Label the disk as "Windows 3.X Startup Disk" and the date.
- Restart your computer with the newly created startup disk in the floppy drive to verify that it starts up the computer as designed.
- If you are able to successfully boot the "A" prompt, using the startup disk, remove the disk and restart the computer.
- If the test fails for any reason, repeat the steps above to create and test the startup disk again.
- Store the startup disk in a safe location with other important disks, such as an antivirus package on a disk.
Tips:
- All data on the floppy disk will be erased during the "Make System Disk..." process.
- Drag files from the C drive display over the top of the A drive display within File Manager to copy to the floppy disk.
- Locked disks may not be changed by viruses or any other type of software.
