Scareware Refunds Could Lead to Scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is issuing refund checks to approximately 320,000 victims of scareware peddled through Innovative Marketing. But as John Leyden of The Register points out, the refund program could itself lead to new scams. If you think you are entitled to a refund or have questions about the settlement, you can call the settlement administrator (Epiq Systems) toll free at 1-877-853-3541 or visit www.FTC.gov/refunds for more information.

Most importantly, if you receive an unsolicited phone call, email, or other correspondence from someone purporting to be from the FTC or Epiq Systems and they are asking you to confirm sensitive details like your social security number - DO NOT respond. Instead, phone the number provided above. And if you do encounter such a scam, be sure to file a complaint with the FTC.
