I'm a big fan of simple. Ironically, it's usually the best engineers who can devise something simple, while the less experienced developers tend to over-engineer. The problem with an over-engineered product is that it is usually difficult to use, causes some system conflicts, and then falls short of the job it was intended to do in the first place.
Bitdefender Safego is really simple, and that's a good thing. Safego (pronounced Safe-Ego) is a free addon for Facebook and Twitter that keeps track of posts to your Facebook wall or Twitter feed and lets you know when a malicious link has been posted. For Facebook users, the addon also lets you scan your privacy settings to ensure your settings are secure (which also helps prevent privacy exposure from unanticipated changes from Facebook). In addition, you can see whether your Facebook connections are also using Safego, giving you a better idea of how trustworthy the posts are.
Safego does all of its scanning in-the-cloud, which means you don't have to worry about conflicts with your existing antivirus software, nor do you have to worry about downloading signature updates to stay protected. In addition to securing Facebook and Twitter, the Safego dashboard also gives you one-click access to Bitdefender QuickScan.
While not a substitute for installed antivirus, QuickScan does offer a valued second opinion and it does so quickly. QuickScan works on the premise of "known good", only scanning files that are not included in the whitelist. This method means results of the scan are generally received in 60 seconds or less, instead of the hour or more with traditional online scanners. QuickScan is a detection tool, not a removal tool, so again it's not a substitute for installed antivirus.
