Election-Themed Breaking News Alerts

Friday November 7, 2008

Attackers are once again using provocative headlines to trick recipients into visiting malicious websites. The current mal-spam typically arrives with "Breaking news" as the sender and contains subject lines such as:

Barak and McCane killed
McCane private secret
Vote results are fake
McCane died of heart attack

It's obvious the attackers aren't too versed in world events; John McCain - not McCane - was the Republican presidential nominee. As with previous scams involving breaking news alerts, the links in the email point to sites laden with exploit code that attempts to install malware on susceptible computers.

These trojaned breaking news alerts serve as a good reminder of why Internet safety is so important.

I especially like the one about the “Private Secret.” I suppose that is as opposed to a “Public Secret.” So far, I have not had the Privilege of seeing any of this garbage in my Inbox. The mis-spellings and poor English alone would tip me off that they are malware. The clowns who send this stuff out would probably get a lot farther if they would learn to spell, write, and speak English!
