USB / Portable Antivirus

Friday August 1, 2008
It's often necessary to scan a system from a dormant state. One of the best ways to do this is by booting to a BartPE Recovery CD, then running a scan from a USB drive. To do that, you'll need to grab a copy of ClamWin Portable and install it to the USB drive. You'll also want to keep it updated, so that should you ever need to use it, you'll be ready. The easiest route is to download ClamWin Portable from PortableApps.com. Intrepid DIY-types can build it from scratch following these instructions from ClamWin.

Make sure you insert the USB drive before booting to the BartPE Recovery CD; otherwise, the drive won't be recognized. Once you've booted successfuly to the BartPE Recovery CD, locate the ClamWin Portable installation on the USB drive and commence scanning your problem drive(s). Note that scans run from a USB drive can be very slow.
