Uptick in IRS Phishing Scams

Tuesday September 4, 2007
Scammers are taking advantage of looming tax deadlines for extended filers. A recent example of the classic IRS tax refund phishing scam follows:
After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $93.60. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 6-9 days in order to process it.

A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

To access your tax refund online, please click here

Regards,
Internal Revenue Service

Those that do follow the admonishment to 'click here' will be directed to a spoofed website that predictably instructs them to enter their credit card details complete with CVV code and PIN number. Instead of the promised refund, the hapless victim will instead be subject to credit card fraud.
