Trend Micro Internet Security Suite 2007 (which many refer to as PC-cillin 2007) appears to be causing
performance problems for many. This is particularly perplexing as previous versions of Trend Micro PC-cillin, notably the 2006 and 2005 versions, were applauded for their streamlined performance. The culprit in the 2007 version appears to lie in 'PcScnSrv.exe', a component of the suite that many claim is consuming 97% to 100% of cpu utilization and anywhere from 50-70 Mb of RAM. The result: programs are hanging, websites timeout, and the system runs so slowly it's difficult to even shutdown.
The solution: uninstall the 2007 version, reboot the system and then reinstall the 2006 version using the license key from the *2007* version. This will get you another year of updates and buy some time until Trend Micro resolves the performance issues. Rumor has it, a patch is in the works for sometime in January.
UPDATE: According to Trend Micro, the performance issue is a result of a conflict with the Immunize feature in SpyBot Search and Destroy. For details, see: PC-cillin Slowdown Traced to SpyBot S&D
Yes I am having exactly the same problem with the 2007 version of Pc Cillin, it really is quite annoying. At this stage i am shutting down Pcscnsrv.exe in the task manager and will await a fix for it.
Unbelievable negative impact on performance, especially after running smoothly for months on the 2006 version. Thanks for the workaround, I’m already happier; had some difficulty finding the 2006 online to re-install, but did find it after some Google work.
I downloaded the 2006 version here. Haven’t untinstalled 2007 yet, but I’ll add a heads-up if there are any problems installing 2006 (assuming my PC isn’t harmed irreparably).
Uninstalled 207 and reinstalled 2006 as per Sean source above. No problem. All the speed is back. Shame on you Trend Micro.
Trand Micro has a solution posted here: http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/viewxml.do?ContentID=EN-1033903&id=EN-1033903
Basically says there is a conflict with Spybot S&D.
Checking back after the required restart, it certainly seems to have fixed the problem. The steps they call for:
-Run Spybot S&D
-Click Immunize, then Undo
-Close Spybot
-Delete c:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007\usrwl.dat
-Restart.
Ok, I tried the Spybot fix too and it really seems to have corrected the problem, thanks a million!
Uninstalling Spybot and Adaware did NOT help me. I’ve contacted them six or seven times. They’ve had me download a new version of the program (which did not help). They’ve had me remove Spybot and Adaware (which did not help). They have not answered my emails. They have not corrected the problem. Sad to see a lightweight and effective solution turned into horrible bloatware. Instead of making sure the product works properly they added tons of marginally-useless “services”. Horrible product.
I uninstalled 2007 and reinstalled 2006 with ’07s registration key like you said. It worked like charm.
Having exactly the same issues as John, comment 8 Dec17. Have unloaded Spybot and hasn’t helped at all. My computer is almost unusable at the moment. Have spoken to them 6 times, reloaded with and without firewall 3 times and still no closer to a solution. Will be demanding a full refund and but other security software.
Shame as 2005 was great but did allow spyware through which is why I was running Spybot as well.
For those having issues, you have to follow the instructions on the Trend site exactly. Just uninstalling Sbybot IS NOT enough. You have “undo” the immunization within Spybot and remove a file from the Trend directory. The complete solution is here:

Good luck.
Same here hommie. Feelin a drain from the cpu brain by pcscnsrv.exe
I believe I’ve found an answer:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=157277
never had spybot or anything like that installed on new PC, only PCcillin 2006. After installing 2007 one of the cores on my pc was being fully utilised. I just deleted the file, rebooted and I am now seeing almost no slowdown with regular mem usage at 30MB. Might be worth trying if having same problem
Same problem here, and it is also thrashing my hard drive non-stop. Uninstalled PC Cillin and it went away. Thanks for the link to the 2006 version, Sean…
I’ve had the same problem, including the worthless tech support. Based on my experience & reviews I’ve seen elsewhere, I think it’s a conflict with IE7. Of the 3 computers in our house running Pc-Cillin, mine is the only one with IE7 installed and it’s the only one with major performance issues.
PcCillin Internet Security 12… was installed on my new Dell and this PC has always been slow.. got it in 9/06.. which “version” do I have??/ I think ‘06…
can you just disable trend micro’s spyware feature and still immunize spybot search and destroy? i think spybot works pretty good and i’m trying to get around unsecuring my computer by un-immunizing….
I tried reverting back to trend micro 2006 using my 2007 serial key. When i tried to register it came up with: “The serial number you entered is invalid.”
I don’t know why it does not work, as others have reported being able to use their 2007 serial. I am using the same serial which is from a six user package. please post help as i don’t want to use trend micro 2007 and have to weaken spybot.
I uninstalled 2007 and installed 2006 from the link at the top of this comment section. That went fine but like the comment above mine (by “sinc”) I keep getting the error message too saying my serial number is invalid.
Also, I have never used spybot but had the same problems as everyone else.
Hi
I’ve just installed the lastest version of PC-Cillin 2007, which tells me I have to remove Spybot – That is Trends “fix”. Unfortunately, that didn’t fix the problem, now they are telling me I have remove Ad-Aware too. Basically PC-Cillin can not co-exist with any other product. When I phoned Trend all the would tell me is that is the way it is !!! This product is crap, the support is even worse. Stay away from it IMHO
Looks like Trend finally addressed this issue, and updated 2007 for Vista at the same time. Look here:
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/viewxml.do?ContentID=EN-1033903
I did as you said, installing the 2006 version back on using the 2007 license, but it doesnt work like that. It is installed and working, but warns me time and time again of an incorrect serial number, and doesnt show my expiration date at all as it will not let me register it. Not having Spybot installed on my computer, I know that isnt the problem, so putting the old on with a new number sounded like my best bet, but alas, no luck. Any other ideas? 2007 cannot be put back on as the amount of ram (and I have 1 GIG) it uses is totally un acceptable in my book.
THE ANSWER:(?) it comes down to this as you all know; Pcscnsrv.exe. On my computer this has shown to be upto 100,000K on my task list! I tried the solution from Trend and this did not work – the reason (I think at least) is below but first my idea: After this solution failed, I looked at the file usrwl.dat in more detail. This was for me 40.2MB. Open the file (will open a notepad text document) – will take some time as it may be extremely long – and see where the problems lie in your system by simply reading the entries – it is not perhaps crystal clear – mine were traceable to registry entries as shown below : I decided to delete these as they appear fairly useless, So to do this; (I take no responsability if you destroy your machine, this is only information to what I have done to try and fix the problem and it seems to work, and above this; make sense)
Click START, then RUN and enter “regedit” and press enter locate your culprits I traced mine to here (as well as some others)
HKEYUSERS:S-1-5-18:SOFTWARE:MICROSOFT:WINDOWS:CURRENTVERSION:INTERNETSETTINGS:ZONEMAP:DOMAINS. In here are all the blocked websites in internet explorer, I just deleted these and others, deleted Trend file usrwl.dat again and restarted the process (or restart your machine). The file size is now 156Kb rather than 40.2MB. I’m not sure how cosher this is, so perhaps up to you if you think this is safe and correct? Post if you want any help.
The reason:??? (I assume)
they tell you to update and THEN undo spybot, but when you update you are forced to uninstall spybot. But because spybot adds bad sites to immunize i.e. at first it is approximately 1000 sites whenever you first install, then in a week they add another 700, and so on, you never actually download all of the bad sites – for whatever reason. Previously, before uninstall I had about 18,000 blocked or something ridiculous because I had had the programme on for some time, after the reinstall it was only 1,000 or so and I could not “System Restore” because of Trends poorly worked update and conflicts between old version and new it became apparant. So after undoing the immunize as insructed I was only undoing 1060 blocked sites and so the solution failed. I then read the file as described and so on.
Short & sweet – I had the same problems here is what works:
1. upgrade PC-cillin to 15.30
2. open Task Manager and sort by CPU usage (PcScnSrv.exe will be at the top)
3. turn off the Suspicious Software Alarm System under the Virus & Spyware button in PC-cillin
4. watch PcScnSrv.exe go from ~70% CPU to ~3% CPU
5. enjoy using your PC again! ; )
The spybot fix worked for me for a while, and then the performance problems came back (not clear why or how)–I just could not run Firefox and Outlook 2007 simultaneously, and PcScnSrv.exe was the culprit. Turning off the Suspicious Software Alarm System as referenced above has done the trick. Shame that it’s a key part of the protection I paid for….
The TmProxy.log file was the culprit with my PC-cillin 2007 installation.
My laptop was suffering the same “over-usage” by PcScnSrv.exe and I have never installed SpyBot.
I started to look through all the folders that TM uses and in the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007\log folder the TmProxy.log file was HUGE.
I stopped TM, renamed the file, created a new TmProxy.log file by opening the renamed file and deleting all of the entries except for those created that day, started TM up again, and there was a dramatic reduction in the memory usage.
I contacted TM support and asked why that file did not re-create itself when it got to a certain size (like the ssapi.log file in the same folder does), and was given an answer which made no sense at all.
I’d suggest you look at all the log files that TM produces in these 2 folders
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007\log
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Trend Micro\PC-cillin\log
I found another couple of tweaks for reducing memory usage.
If you have a spam checker as part of your email system, then configure TM not to do Spam Checking.
Another trick is to change the TmProxy service from Automatic to Manual.
Thanks for the great tips, John!
Thank God I found this!! I have been battling this issue for several months, and was about to dump PCC. The solution stated in the Trend article seems to have done the trick for me.
So THAT’S what takes over my computer every so often! It’s been driving me mad. Every once in a while my performance goes WAY down and my harddisk becomes monopolized by something. When this happens, Task Manager always shows PcScnSrv up at the top. I’ve been VERY unhappy with PC-cillin 2007, so it doesn’t surprise me that this is the culprit. None of the fixes here seem to help me. I don’t have Spybot installed anymore and I switched off the suspicious software alarm. It’s still spinning my hard disk! PCC/07 behaves like a virus!!
I did the spybot uninstall stuff (and undo immunize) but forgot to delete the file usrwl.dat per the instructions, which still caused me major performance problems. I’m tempted to just buy something else although I’ve used PC Cillin for years and bought it at the office, and had friends buy it.
Hi all i had same problem drove me up the wall did trend fix didnt work for me too. tried it again i didnt upgrade version this time what i did was,
Reinstalled spybot did updates
Undo ummunize
went to advanced mode
tools
resident
cleared the tick box teatimer
closed
found usrwl.dat file deleted
restarted and now all is right with the world once again,
Worked for me hope it helps others to
First, let me say that I have been using PCC since 2002 and never had any type of problems until this, but it is likely I created the CPU hogging situation while chasing another problem in XP.
I started out about 3 weeks ago trying to fix what I thought were excessive slow boot-up times in XP, thinking it was ads or spyware or a virus. PCC scans always came back clean, but I know that not every program can be 100% accurate in finding glitches. So, on the advice of a friend who does not run PC-Cillin IS 2007, I installed SpyBot, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Virus and Windows Defender, and soon found out they created serious havoc with PCC.
Even after uninstalling all the other stuff, my XP slowdowns while launching apps persisted ((boot up times never improved, as was not related)), and my CPU usage by PcScnSrv was 99%, so this proved that PCC had to be the problem. On my machine, my file in the Task Manager was 190k, and the usrwl.dat file was over 90 megs. Once I started looking for solutions, I found these comments and suggestions for repair. The only thing that worked for me was the ‘Short & Sweet’ repair (#25) by anicetyguy. I wasn’t about to uninstall PCC and risk not being able to get it to run again, so I continued to look for a repair. Thanks to all who posted here.
My lap top came to a grinding halt with pcCillin 2007, and I DO NOT have spybot, so it has nothing to do with that. It was virutally unusable for two months. I finally uninstalled 2007 and re-installed 2006 and it now boots up quickly and is fast again. I almost tossed it to buy a new lap top, and mine is only a year old. How could TM put out such a bad product with an obvious design flaw. I will never upgrade past 2006, and if I feel the need to get updated anit-virus software I will try another brand. I can no longer trust them.
I tried uninstalling Spybot and the problem is still there. So they had better look for another culprit.
Trend made me uninstall Spybot S&D but the problem persists. Task manager shows that pcscnsrv.exe is using 75 megs of ram, more than any other process.
Ok, so when is the fix comming? I use SPYBOT because its much much better then Trend’s anti spyware. Unless Trend improve its spyware then they need to resolve this confliction, or its gonna be bye bye Trend and hello competitor!!!
Applied the fix but got only temporary minimal improvement. Like many users above, this is a teeth-gnashing and frustrating problem. I chose Trend Micro because of Consumer Reports’ recommendation, but I will seek another product when this subscription expires. This is a PC-killer!
Update to Trand internet security 2008 (renamed from pc-illin), free to license holders of 2007. Problem no longer exists.
