Stration Worms Continue

Monday November 20, 2006
Multiple new variants of the Stration email worm continue to flood inboxes. Stration is a family of mass-mailing email worms that attempt to disable antivirus and security software and also attempt to download additional malicious code (usually new copies of itself) from remote website. For details, see the Stration Worm Description.

As with its predecessors, the new Station worms make a grammatically akward attempt to convince recipients the email attachment is an update for Windows. A copy of one such message follows:

Mail server report.

Our firewall determined the e-mails containing worm copies are being sent from your computer.

Nowadays it happens from many computers, because this is a new virus type (Network Worms).

Using the new bug in the Windows, these viruses infect the computer unnoticeably. After the penetrating into the computer the virus harvests all the e-mail addresses and sends the copies of itself to these e-mail addresses

Please install updates for worm elimination and your computer restoring.

The rapid procession of new variants may mean there will be a delay before antivirus signature definitions are released. Make sure you update your antivirus software as often as your vendor provides signature updates. If you should receive one of the Stration email, simply delete the email. Opening the email attachment will infect your PC and will spread the infection to other email addresses found on your system.
