The Perfect Mark
Wednesday May 17, 2006
Mitchell Zuckoff of The New Yorker has penned "The Perfect Mark", a tale of international intrigue where the lines between victim and perpetrator blur. But it's no story. It's real. The article details the events of a Massachusetts psychologist, John W. Worley, who fell victim to a Nigerian 419 scam, and then became willing accomplice to the criminal acts necessary to see the fraud through to fruition.
Instead of gaining part of a $55 million dollar bounty he had been asked to launder, Worley received two years in prison and nearly $600,000 in fines. Yet even now, Worley still seems to grab at straws, still believes the scammers were legitimately seeking his help.
It's a must read.
