Nyxem Worm Payload Date Nears

Wednesday February 1, 2006
The Nyxem worm is set to deliver the first nasty payload on February 3rd - overwriting all files with DMP, DOC, MDB, MDE, PDF, PPS, PPT, PSD, RAR, XLS, and ZIP extensions.

Known by a wide range of aliases, including the Kama Sutra and Black worm, the Nyxem worm ups the tally on a website counter each time it infects. The LURHQ Threat Intelligence Group combed through the traffic to the tally site, identifying which requests matched the worm's signature and which were the result of curiousity seekers.

After cleaning up the data, LURHQ estimated that approximately 300,000 users were infected worldwide. LURHQ reports that the top 5 infected countries, in order, are India (79610), Peru (54878), Italy (22710), Turkey (15516), and the United States (15270).

These numbers are substantially lower than initial reports which placed the number of infected systems at well over 500,000.
