PC-cillin2004 review UPDATE
Tuesday December 23, 2003
In the PC-cillin Internet Security 2004 review, I noted that I had reinstalled ZoneAlarm and was running it alongside PC-cillin on Windows 2000. Many of you asked if I had tried the same installation on Windows XP. I have since done so and have now updated the review to reflect that. Thus far, my experience has been quite positive - ZoneAlarm and PC-cillin 2004 are peacefully co-existing on the computer. Because I use the XP system most and manage the majority of my email accounts on it, I was eager to try out Trend's spam solution in a high-imact environment -
and Trend's solution did not disappoint.
Though I had been using web-based spam solutions on two of those accounts, an unacceptable amount of spam was still getting through. More importantly, using the web-based solutions forced me to lose the ability to double-check the email in plain text mode. Displaying email in the web-based solutions I was using rendered it in the more risky HTML format. Not only is HTML-formatted email capable of harbouring malicious scripts or a virus, it can be embedded with invisible web bugs and other tracking devices used by spammers. In short, I was eager to regain the ability to review the email in plain text mode.
Not only has the Trend solution given me back the ability to preview spam in plain text if desired, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it also does a much better job at identifying the spam than either the BellSouth MailGuard or Postini options that were previously available to me.
To streamline the spam protection, I added a simple message rule to my email client to send all the flagged email to the Deleted Items folder where it remains contained until I permanently delete it. I also took a few moments to add all of my routine correspondents and newsletters to which I subscribe to the PC-cillin whitelist, so that no email sent by my friends or colleagues will ever be subject to spam filtering. As a result, I get a safer way to preview any flagged email, mitigate the chance of losing legitimate email, and virtually eliminate the burden of spam!
Of course, PC-cillin Internet Security 2004 also offers superb virus protection, a firewall, and a host of other fine features. For details, read the PC-cillin Internet Security 2004 review
